  • Top Tips For Looking After Your Teeth This Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of year – full of festive parties, family gatherings and plenty of treats. However, all those mince pies, chocolates and glasses of fizz can take their toll on your teeth if you’re not careful. At Summertown Dental & Implants, we often see an increase in dental problems in January that could have been avoided with a few simple steps during the festive season.

Whether you’re celebrating in Oxford, Woodstock, Wallingford, Thame, Burford or Chipping Norton, here are our top tips to help you enjoy Christmas while still protecting your oral health.

    Be mindful of sugary treats

From selection boxes to Christmas pudding, sugar is everywhere at this time of year. Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth, producing acids that can lead to tooth decay and cavities.

    What you can do:

    • Try to enjoy sweet treats with meals rather than grazing throughout the day.
    • Limit sugary snacks between meals.
    • Choose cheese, nuts or fresh vegetables as tooth-friendly alternatives where possible.

If you do indulge (and let’s be honest, most of us will!), remember to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

    Watch Out for Festive Drinks

Mulled wine, prosecco, cocktails and even fruit juices are often high in sugar and acidity. Acidic drinks can erode tooth enamel, making teeth more sensitive and vulnerable to decay.

    Top tip:
Sip water alongside alcoholic or fizzy drinks to help rinse acids away and keep your mouth hydrated. Avoid brushing immediately after acidic drinks – wait at least 30-60 minutes to protect your enamel.

Don’t use your teeth as tools

It can be tempting to use your teeth to open bottle tops, crack nuts or tear packaging during Christmas celebrations. Unfortunately, this is a common cause of chipped, cracked or broken teeth.

    Instead:

    • Use proper tools like nutcrackers and scissors.
    • Be especially careful if you already have crowns, veneers or fillings.

Emergency dental appointments often spike after Christmas parties, and prevention is always better than treatment.

Stick to your oral hygiene routine

Late nights, travel and busy schedules can disrupt your normal routine, but maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during the festive season.

    Aim to:

    • Brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
    • Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.
    • Pack a travel toothbrush if you’re staying with friends or family in or around Oxfordshire.

These small habits make a big difference to your long-term dental health.

Be cautious with hard and sticky foods

Hard sweets, ice cubes and toffee can damage teeth, fillings and dental work. Sticky foods can cling to your teeth for longer, increasing the risk of decay.

If you live in areas like Thame, Burford or Chipping Norton and are travelling over the holidays, dental emergencies can be inconvenient and stressful. Taking extra care when eating can help you avoid unwanted surprises.

    Manage Stress and Jaw Clenching

The festive period can be busy and stressful for some people, which may lead to teeth grinding or jaw clenching (bruxism). This can cause jaw pain, headaches and worn or cracked teeth.

If you notice jaw discomfort or tooth sensitivity:

    • Try to relax your jaw during the day.
    • Be mindful of clenching during stressful moments.
    • Speak to your dentist about a night guard if grinding is an issue.

    Don’t forget your dental check-up

The run-up to Christmas is a great time to book a dental check-up, especially if you’re based in Oxford, Woodstock, Wallingford or nearby towns. A routine examination allows us to spot potential problems early and ensure your teeth are in good shape for the festive season.

If you already have a dental hygiene check-up scheduled for the new year, maintaining good habits over Christmas will help keep your smile healthy until then.

Enjoy Christmas – with your smile intact

Christmas should be enjoyed, and that includes festive food and drink. By being mindful of sugar, sticking to your oral hygiene routine and avoiding risky habits, you can protect your teeth while still celebrating.
